About 'ca colleges and universities'|Haunted Southern College & University Buildings - Alabama and Florida








The               new               school               year               has               just               begun,               but               high               school               juniors               and               seniors,               as               well               as               their               parents,               are               considering               their               future               education.

They               are               deciding               where               they               will               go               to               college               and               trying               to               find               ways               to               pay               for               it.

According               to               a               statement               released               on               PR               Newswire,               the               company               CollegiateZone               is               trying               to               help.

The               cost               of               higher               education               continues               to               skyrocket.

For               example,               one               year               of               tuition,               room               and               board               for               a               state               resident               at               the               University               of               Texas               will               cost               $14,000               this               year;               a               year               at               Harvard               now               costs               $40,000.

With               costs               at               some               schools               nearing               the               amount               of               many               parents'               annual               income,               the               need               for               scholarships,               grants,               and               other               forms               of               financial               aid               has               never               been               greater.
               In               spite               of               this               need,               every               year,               millions               of               dollars               in               college               funding               goes               unused               because               guidance               counselors,               parents               and               students               aren't               aware               of               it               and               colleges               haven't               had               a               resource               available               to               them               that               identifies               qualifying               students.

And               while               there               are               resources               meant               to               address               this               issue,               such               as               the               "Paying               for               College               Student               Resource               Guide"               by               U.S.

Congresswoman               Lucille               Roybal-Allard               (D-CA),               the               information               can               be               difficult               to               find,               especially               the               various               application               deadlines.
               CollegiateZone               attempts               to               fill               this               need               by               providing               college               development               tools               via               three               diverse               services.

Using               their               Topquest               service,               students               are               able               to               search               more               than               900,000               scholarships,               grants               and               awards,               worth               over               $4.5               billion,               and               get               matched               based               on               their               academic               and               personal               criteria.
               "Topquest               is               a               unique,               all-in-one               web-based               system               that               offers               students               development               tools               to               find               the               right               opportunities               for               college,"               Stu               Scandridge,               CollegiateZone               founder               and               CEO               said               in               the               press               release.
               Topquest               allows               high               school               students               and               college               transfers               to               search,               match               and               apply               to               multiple               colleges,               as               well               as               match               to               funding               with               just               a               few               clicks.

The               elaborate               search               logic               tool               gives               students               more               specific               detailed               search-match               results               and               qualifies               them               based               on               their               SAT,               ACT,               GPA               and               class               ranking,               and               their               personal               criteria.

Students               apply               to               colleges               using               the               one-time,               online               CollegiateZone               National               Common               Application               which               is               used               to               auto-fill               multiple               college               applications               and               the               Free               Application               for               Federal               Student               Aid               form.
               Topscholar               and               Topjock               are               services               that               feature               enhanced               self-marketing               tools               for               performing               arts               and               science               students               and               athletes               who               want               to               continue               their               talent               in               college.
               "Topjock               helped               me               get               noticed,"               student               Sarah               Hunsicker,               who               used               the               service               to               search               for               an               opportunity               to               play               volleyball               and               created               an               online               profile               with               video,               audio,               photos,               and               newspaper               clippings,               said               in               the               statement.

"The               process               was               easier               and               less               expensive               than               other               companies.

Had               it               not               been               for               this               service,               I               probably               wouldn't               be               playing               college               volleyball               today               on               a               scholarship."
               Colleges               and               universities               have               begun               using               Topquest               to               post               and               manage               their               scholarships               and               grants               in               the               CollegiateZone               database.

They               are               also               using               the               system               to               find               students               that               match               their               curriculum               and               meet               their               scholarship               and               grant               requirements,               especially               those               that               go               unused.

    In               order               to               better               understand               and               protect               the               sharks               of               the               St.

    Lawrence,               the               Greenland               Shark               and               Elasmobranch               Education               and               Research               Group               [GEERG]               is               seeking               funding               to               set-up               the               world's               first               visual               shark               monitoring               system               near               Baie-Comeau,               Quebec.

    This               webcam               system               would               allow               GEERG               to               visually               study               individual               sharks               at               the               only               known               location               in               the               world               where               the               Greenland               shark               can               be               observed               at               shallow               depths.

    The               underwater               webcams               would               also               allow               GEERG               to               study               the               shark's               habitat               and               how               it               interacts               with               other               species               in               the               area.

    The               online               images               would               be               accessible               at               all               times               to               the               general               public,               schools               and               other               institutions               in               Baie-Comeau               and               all               over               the               world               in               order               to               promote               environmental               awareness,               shark               conservation,               and               to               showcase               Canada's               little-known               underwater               heritage.
                   Financial               and               physical               constraints               prevent               GEERG               from               spending               much               time               in               the               water.

    Diving               operations               are               expensive               and               require               much               preparation               so               they               are               limited               to               no               more               than               three               hours               underwater               per               day.

    Disturbances               caused               by               divers               have               an               effect               on               the               shark's               activities               and               thus               prevent               GEERG               from               observing               its               natural               behavior.

    The               webcams               would               allow               GEERG               to               monitor               the               shark               and               its               environment               24               hours               a               day               for               most               of               the               year.

    Anyone               with               a               computer               could               also               log               on               and               help.
                   Millions               of               sharks               are               killed               for               their               fins               every               year.

    Because               many               other               shark               species               have               already               been               decimated,               the               Greenland               shark               has               recently               been               targeted               as               a               new               source               of               fins.

    And               yet               so               little               is               known               about               this               species,               including               its               population,               range               and               biology.

    GEERG's               webcam               system               would               allow               them               to               learn               more               about               this               shark,               and               the               new               knowledge               would               be               shared               with               other               scientists,               regulatory               agencies               and               the               fishing               community               in               order               to               protect               this               key               northern               species               and               its               environment.

    All               GEERG               scientists               and               divers               are               volunteers               so               every               penny               of               the               funding               would               go               to               the               project.
                   GEERG               was               the               first               group               to               conduct               pelagic               shark               dives               on               the               East               Coast               and               they               were               the               first               ever               to               film               the               Greenland               shark               under               natural               conditions               anywhere               in               the               world.

    Their               work               has               been               documented               in               scientific               publications,               documentaries,               articles               and               news               stories.

    They               have               also               been               active               in               schools               to               educate               youth               on               the               need               to               better               understand               and               appreciate               sharks               in               Canada.
                   GEERG               is               a               not-for-profit               registered               charity               that               requires               financial               assistance               to               conduct               field               operations.

    Donations               are               tax               deductible               in               Canada               (Canada               Revenue:               834462913RR0001)               and               also               in               the               U.S.

    through               the               Shark               Research               Institute,               a               non-profit               501(c)(3)               research               organization.

    GEERG               is               also               a               member               of               the               Canadian               Association               for               Underwater               Science.
                   The               results               of               their               work,               as               well               as               educational               materials               are               available               on               their               website               (http://www.geerg.ca),               in               English               and               in               French.
                   Several               corporations,               institutions               and               universities               have               become               GEERG               affiliates.

    Their               support               has               enabled               them               to               conduct               ground-breaking               research               on               the               Greenland               shark.

    Even               though               the               San               Diego               area               is               not               among               the               largest               regions               in               the               United               States,               it               is               home               to               a               number               of               major               colleges               and               universities.

    These               institutions               of               higher               learning               are               scattered               around               the               locality,               with               each               offering               distinct               academic               programs               and               specializations.

    Each               of               the               top               colleges               in               San               Diego               is               particularly               strong               in               at               least               one               of               four               key               academic               areas-medicine,               engineering,               business,               and               education.

    The               region               also               has               a               robust               community               college               system               that               provides               career               training               and               education.

    In               this               article,               I               will               offer               a               list               of               the               top               colleges               in               San               Diego               and               provide               a               brief               summary               of               each.

    The               list               is               in               no               particular               order.

    1)               University               of               California,               San               Diego               -               UCSD
                   UCSD               is               one               of               the               best               universities               in               the               UC               system.

    It               also               has               the               distinction               of               being               the               only               school               of               medicine               in               the               San               Diego               area.

    The               university's               medical               center               is               one               of               the               biggest               and               most               distinguished               hospitals               in               the               country.

    In               addition               to               being               the               only               school               of               medicine               in               the               area,               UCSD               also               offers               the               only               pharmacy               school               in               San               Diego               whose               program               is               comparable               in               quality               to               that               of               top               pharmacy               colleges               like               UCSF               and               UNC.

    UCSD               is               also               renowned               for               its               top-notched               engineering               program,               which               is               designed               and               overseen               by               recipients               of               highly               acclaimed               accolades               such               as               MacArthur               Fellowship               and               National               Medal               of               Science.

    The               top               public               college,               as               a               whole,               employs               at               least               six               Nobel               Prize               laureates.
                   2)               University               of               San               Diego               -               USD
                   Like               UCSD,               USD               is               among               America's               top               colleges.

    The               state-of-the-art               university               is               a               private               institution,               sponsored               by               the               Roman               Catholic               Church.

    However,               USD               is               independent               of               the               Church;               non-Catholics               are               free               to               enroll               in               the               college.

    The               University               of               San               Diego               is               famous               for               its               school               of               law,               one               of               very               few               to               have               been               admitted               to               the               prestigious               Order               of               the               Coif-the               highest               honor               for               a               law               school.

    As               USD               is               a               private               college,               enrollment               in               the               school               is               fairly               expensive.

    Tuition               and               other               expenses               per               year               (for               an               undergrad)               can               easily               reach               $25,000.
                   3)               San               Diego               State               University               -               SDSU
                   SDSU               is               the               largest               and               oldest               university               in               the               San               Diego               area.

    In               fact,               a               majority               of               college               graduates               in               the               locality               are               SDSU               alumni.

    This               is               due               to               the               university               being               one               of               the               most               affordable               in               the               nation.

    SDSU               is               heavily               subsidized               by               state               and               local               entities.

    Consequently,               the               public               college               is               able               to               provide               quality               education               at               a               low               premium.
                   The               popular               university               is               known               for               its               strong               business               and               education               programs.

    As               SDSU               has               robust               ties               with               local               businesses               and               schools,               graduates               from               these               programs               are               highly               regarded               and               have               a               good               chance               of               being               hired.

    Additionally,               SDSU               is               noted               for               its               successful               athletic               programs.

    One               big               drawback               with               the               university               is               the               current               budget               shortfall               faced               by               the               state               of               California.

    As               SDSU               relies               greatly               on               state               subsidies,               future               funding               cuts               and               tuition               hikes               are               inevitable.
                   Other               universities               and               colleges               in               San               Diego               worth               mentioning               include               California               State               University               San               Marcos,               Point               Loma               Nazarene               University,               and               San               Diego               Community               Colleges               (Miramar,               Mesa,               &               City).
