About 'good college in california'|Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray that I get in to a good college

My               husband               works               for               a               local               high               school               in               Southern               California.

For               the               past               five               years,               we               have               seen               education               take               big               cuts.

Some               years,               there               have               been               more               furlough               days               for               the               teachers.

Most               years               there               have               been               salary               reductions.

There               have               been               deep               cuts               in               educational               programs               and               class               sizes               continue               to               rise.

Prop               30               relies               on               "temporary               taxes               to               fund               education."               This               includes               an               increase               in               "sales               and               use               tax               by               ¼               cent               for               four               years."               It               also               "increases               personal               income               tax               rates               on               upper-income               taxpayers               for               seven               years."               At               first               glance,               the               proposition               seems               like               it               will               help               our               education               crisis               in               California.

However,               like               any               ballot               initiative,               there               are               also               shortcomings               to               Prop               30.
               The               Good
Five               years               ago,               I               was               able               to               make               a               big               impact               on               English               Language               Learners               because               I               had               an               average               of               25               students               in               4th               grade.

For               a               few               hours               a               week,               I               had               an               aid               and               there               were               several               pull               out               programs               for               kids.

As               someone               who               "made               a               difference"               with               lower               class               sizes,               it               is               discouraging               to               know               that               many               kindergarten               classes               in               our               area               now               have               a               32:1               student-teacher               ratio.

A               passage               of               Prop               30               would               give               money               to               schools               to               be               "spent               on               smaller               class               sizes,               up-to-date               textbooks               and               rehiring               teachers."               Another               plus               is               the               money               goes               into               an               account               that               "legislature               can't               touch."               Finally,               it               prevents               college               tuition               hikes.
               The               Bad
Prop               30               will               "temporarily               increases               the               state               sales               tax               rate               for               all               taxpayers               and               the               personal               income               tax               (PIT)               rates               for               upper-income               taxpayers."               Of               course,               who               likes               having               more               taxes?

In               addition,               there               is               a               possibility               that               these               "tax               hikes"               won't               give               more               money               to               the               schools.

Instead,               politicians               can               take               "existing               money               for               schools,"               use               it               for               other               purposes               and               replace               the               funds               with               these               new               taxes.

This               sounds               a               little               fishy               to               me.

In               addition,               the               government               needs               to               do               a               better               job               managing               their               money.
               The               Ugly
If               the               initiative               doesn't               pass,               it               will               spark               what               are               called               "trigger               cuts."               This               will               lead               to               spending               cuts               in               the               amount               of               "$5.4               billion               to               K-12               education"               and               "$500               million               to               public               universities."               Among               the               consequences               of               a               reduced               budget,               these               cuts               will               lead               to               a               shorter               instructional               year               for               schools.

As               a               teacher,               I               always               found               it               hard               to               squeeze               the               entire               curriculum               into               180               days.

I               can't               imagine               what               it               would               be               like               if               I               only               had               165               days.

Living               in               an               area               where               over               60               teachers               and               counselors               in               our               school               district               were               laid               off               for               the               2012-2013               school               year,               I               know               that               these               budget               cuts               are               causing               quality               teachers               to               be               let               go.

In               the               end,               less               teachers               and               a               reduced               budget               means               less               for               our               children.
Although               I               hate               taxes,               I               know               that               the               public               schools               are               in               a               dismal               state.

As               a               credentialed               teacher,               the               wife               of               a               teacher               and               a               concerned               mom,               I               know               if               this               proposition               doesn't               pass,               it's               going               to               lead               to               a               shorter               school               year               and               higher               class               sizes.

This               isn't               something               I               am               willing               to               risk.
